The National Personnel Records Center offers online, phone, and mail options for veterans, next-of-kin, and other requesters
July 18, 2026 — The Virgin Islands Veterans Association (VIVA) wants every member to know how to request their military service records, including DD-214 discharge documents. These records are essential for filing VA disability claims, applying for benefits, verifying eligibility for veteran programs, and settling estate matters for deceased veterans. The National Archives’ National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) is the official source for these records, and VIVA is sharing the request process below to help members navigate it.
Who Can Request Records Online
Veterans requesting their own records, or the next-of-kin of a deceased veteran, can request service records directly online at:
www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records
This online system (eVetRecs) allows veterans and next-of-kin to submit requests without mailing a physical form, and is generally the fastest way to receive records — including copies of the DD-214, which is also available through this same website.
Everyone Else Must Submit a Written Request
All other requesters (such as researchers, employers verifying service, or family members who do not meet the next-of-kin definition) must write in with a complete request. Be sure to include:
•Complete name of the veteran (as used during service)
•Rank/grade
•Social Security number
•Dates of service
•Date of birth of the veteran
